Everyones Adirondack friend! From mid-May to mid-June
For about 3-6 weeks
Here are a few tips that will help with black fly season. Everyone is different so you may agree or disagree with some of these. None of these are guaranteed black fly stoppers but by using several of these together can help deal with them:
1. Cover yourself in light colored clothes; Black Flies are attracted to darker colors.
2. Wearing long-sleeved clothing with elastic cuffs can keep them from getting inside.
3. Wear a broad-rimmed hat and put repellent on the brim.
4. Black Fly season can help your diet since you should avoid eating Sweets which affect your body's odor.
5. They also are attracted to perfume smells and stuff like that.
6. Avoid Avon bug repellent lotions. Although they work very well for some people and against mosquitos some products like Skin So Soft just tenderizes your skin and makes it taste better so the flies have an easier job dining on you.
7. Cigars are great for keeping the buggers out of your face. Especially if the cigars are lit and you're smoking them.
8. Most importantly....DEET. Make sure you have a spray bottle of some product which contains DEET and use the spray bottle to keep it off your hands! It works better than other black fly repellents currently on the market.
9. Avoid rivers and streams during late spring to early summer which is where they are most frequent.
10.For some reason I always see people running with dryer sheets sticking out of their shirts. This seems to work to because I've seen to many people for them to have all forgotten to check the dryer.
11.They are only active during the day and prefer shaded areas.
